FLDigi Training Workshop

FLDIGI Training Workshop

Fldigi (short for Fast light digital) is a free and open-source program which allows an ordinary computer’s sound card to be used as a simple two-way data modem. The software is mostly used by amateur radio operators who connect the microphone and headphone-connections of an amateur radio SSB or FM transceiver to the computer’s headphone and microphone connections.

Fldigi is useful for passing traffic between two or more operators where voice communication is difficult or where written messages are needed.

Along with the companion programs Flamp and Flmsg traffic can be used using compressed modes and kept for future reference or forwarding to other operators.

ARCCC is offering training in the installation and use of Fldigi on an individual or group basis based on demand.

The training will cover:

  • What is Fldigi and how it can be used.
  • Fldigi modes.
  • Installation of the software.
  • Radio connection and setup.
  • Initial software setup.
  • Sending and receiving traffic.
  • Macros.
  • Flamp and Flmsg use.
  • File locations and shortcuts.

The training class will be 4 to 5 hours in length.

Based on interest the class will be scheduled for a Saturday in the Evans area. Participation in the class is limited to 12. Based on interest additional classes may be scheduled.

If you are interested in Fldigi training a response indicating your interest to this notice is your first step.

Fldigi training will be provided in a group setting using Windows only computers. Although the program can operate on Mac and Linux systems classroom training using various operating systems would overly complicate the training.

The following equipment is required to take part in the training:

  • Windows computer with Windows 11 operating system with WiFi.
  • HF transceiver with either a built-in sound card or external sound card and connecting cat and sound interface cables.
  • Radio dummy load and coax.
  • Battery or power supply (120v receptacle available).

The following open-source software will be installed during class, or you can install it prior to the class (preferred):

  • Fldig
  • Flrig
  • Flamp
  • Flmsg
  • A USB driver to interface the radio with the computer
